Another Excellent Review For The Painted Darkness

December 15th, 2010

Blu Gilliand wrote a wonderful review of The Painted Darkness for Dark Scribe Magazine. Here’s just a little bit of it:

“It’s an ambitious piece of storytelling that delves not only into the mysterious act of creation itself — something that many in Freeman’s audience will be able to relate to — to something we can all relate to: the crippling power of childhood fears. The fact that it does all this in quiet, understated tones reminiscent of the likes of Charles L. Grant makes it all the more amazing, moving and powerful… In The Painted Darkness, Freeman is doing far more than telling a scary story (although he is telling a scary story, and doing it quite well). He’s looking at the questions that all artists are frequently asked… The Painted Darkness is a quick read, but it’s one that sinks in and stays with you for a while. Artists will have a special appreciation for Freeman’s views on the nature of creation, but anyone who has an appreciation for the work that artists do — not to mention the appreciation of a good old-fashioned spook story — will enjoy this book.”

My interview with Mick Garris in The Stephen King Library Desk Calendar

November 23rd, 2010

My interview with Mick Garris has been published in the Stephen King Library Desk Calendar 2011 from Book of the Month Club.  The interview is about The Stand miniseries and what it was like adapting Stephen King’s epic novel for television back in 1994.

Here is the sales copy about the calendar, which is easily one of the coolest desk calendars I’ve ever owned:

“If you’re a fan of Stephen King, chances are you avoid pet cemeteries, you have a healthy fear of clowns and when you think of the Man in Black, it isn’t Johnny Cash who comes to mind. But there’s so much more to the master of horror, and in our exclusive Stephen King Library Desk Calendar 2011, you get to spend a year inside his sinister universe. Packed with essays, juicy details and fascinating trivia, this year’s calendar is also full of excerpts from The Stand, articles from professionals he has influenced and more. Also featuring quizzes that test your knowledge—like “Famous Last Words,” which challenges you to match a closing line to the story it came from—this calendar is packed with so many facts and trivia, it’s scary!”

Another great review for The Painted Darkness

October 26th, 2010

Another great review for The Painted Darkness:

http://www.bookgasm.com/reviews/horror/the-painted-darkness/

Here’s just a bit of what the reviewer had to say:

“The fears Freeman marshals here are both familiar and primal — a deep woods and a dark cellar — but his inviting prose and inventive imagery bring fresh perspectives to them, while propelling us as each section progresses. We also get a glimpse at how such fears influence the evasive concept of artistic inspiration and creation. And this then leads into the inevitable question of whether Henry’s art — his painting ‘against the darkness’ — keeps his demons buried or slowly invites them into his life.”

FREE DOWNLOAD ON WOWIO REMINISCENT OF CLASSIC STEPHEN KING STYLE

LOS ANGELES, October 5, 2010 – WOWIO, Inc., an established market leader with an online destination (www.wowio.com) that provides access to rich digital media content and eBooks, is excited to announce that it is offering free PDF downloads of The Painted Darkness, by Brian James Freeman, for the month of October.  The book has received praise from New York Times bestselling authors such as Stewart O’Nan, author of The Night Country and A Prayer for the Dying, who said, “The tone and building dread reminds me of classic Stephen King. Great velocity and impact, and super creepy.”  David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of The Shimmer and creator of Rambo said, “Freeman’s evocative tale about the dark corners of an artist’s imagination is elegant and haunting.”

Each month WOWIO chooses one title to be the “Book of the Month.” This program enables publishers and authors to get their titles into the hands of thousands of readers who might not have come across their books otherwise.  With approximately 300,000 new titles published annually in the US alone, obscurity is the biggest challenge authors and publishers face.  “Our goal at WOWIO is to help publishers stand out by selling their titles on our site.  From time to time we are also able to offer them for free to our readers via our sponsorship program where publishers get paid for every free download.  What sets us apart is that we work hard promoting them virally through various channels such as social media sites and our own web channel, Pop Galaxy,” Kristin Ellison, Editorial Director of WOWIO explains.

“With The Painted Darkness in the horror genre, we knew it would be a fantastic fit for our October Book of the Month.  When there’s an opportunity to play on a theme, in this case Halloween, it makes the promotion that much more fun for our readers and for fans of this genre,” Ellison said.

“This really is a wonderful program because it allows WOWIO to provide a platform for a small press, such as Cemetery Dance, to further their reach to new audiences while our customers get exposure to one of our new publishing partners,” said Brian Altounian, CEO and President of WOWIO.  “The Book of the Month is a great way to build a relationship between publishers and readers, and we love being able to provide the tools to do so.”

Altounian continued, “The publishing market’s rapid transformation into the digital realm has opened up countless opportunities to both promote and merge various types of media relating to a particular title.  At WOWIO, we see authors as brands and want to deliver to our readers who follow them all manner of related content including audio, video, other titles, links to their blogs etc. thus creating a richer experience.  In this WOWIO-exclusive edition of The Painted Darkness, we’ve embedded an audio file of Mark Justice of Horrorworld.org reading the first chapter.  This is just the beginning of these types of initiatives and in the coming months, readers can expect to see our content library and eBooks deepen across the board.”

Cemetery Dance publisher Richard Chizmar said, “This is an experiment about getting The Painted Darkness into the hands of as many readers as possible by making it as easy as possible for them to give it a try, and we’re excited that WOWIO shares our vision in doing this.  We think this promotion will only help generate more word of mouth for this terrific book, which will in turn sell more copies of the hardcover.”

WOWIO is continually looking to work with new publishers producing titles across all categories. To learn more, please contact editorial director Kristin Ellison at editorial@wowio.com.

Publishers Weekly review of The Painted Darkness

October 1st, 2010

We received the Publishers Weekly review of The Painted Darkness and it was extremely positive.  Publishers Weekly is where booksellers and librarians learn about new books, so this should help generate even more bookstore and distributor orders:

“Fast-paced, satisfying horror… a compelling read thanks to skillfully composed prose that builds tension and evokes emotional response.”

Reviews for The Painted Darkness

September 17th, 2010

Some of the early reviews for The Painted Darkness have started to arrive and so far, so good!

The Painted Darkness is one of the best stories I’ve read this year… We all have childhood demons of one kind or another and this story really struck a chord with me. Mr. Freeman takes you on a journey that is both dark and uplifting. This story will scare the hell out of you and also bring a tear to your eyes.”

Peter Schwotzer, Famous Monsters Of Filmland

“Freeman has written a memorable tale of how our fears contribute to our creativity and what can happen if we wait too long to confront them. It is a touching and terrifying novel that will make an impression that will definitely last.”
Barry Hunter, The Baryon Review

“Quite possibly one of the darkest, most beautifully written books I’ve seen this year.”
Paperback Horror

“This book… is not to be missed. A well-written suspense tale that will frighten and touch.”
Stillwater Public Library Newsletter, August 2010

“His writing oozes with classic Stephen King style. Brian’s pacing and storytelling were spot-on, invoking a sense of fear and chills as I read, and in the end he took me by surprise with a refreshing twist.”
— Daniel S. Boucher, The Novel Blog
