The Halloween Children reviewed by October Country

Blu Gilliand over at October Country has reviewed The Halloween Children (which I co-wrote with Norman Prentiss for Earthling Publications) and he had some very nice things to say about the book:

The Halloween Children is a twisty funhouse ride through the minds of Brian James Freeman and Norman Prentiss, two enormously talented writers who have created an instant Halloween classic in this, their first collaboration. Much like Norm Partridge’s Dark HarvestThe Halloween Children is an expert distillation of the Halloween season, capturing that peculiar mix of excitement, dread and outright fear in its pages… From the great, early slow build of the book to the terrifying, satisfying payoff, The Halloween Children is a complete success. Freeman and Prentiss do a great job in blending their unique styles into one pure voice – like Stephen King and Peter Straub with The Talisman and Black House, you’ll try to guess who wrote what, and you’ll most likely get it wrong. Reading this was the perfect kickoff to the Halloween season for me, and I have a feeling it will be part of my permanent October rotation for a long time to come.”

Blu had a lot more to day and you can read the full review at October Country.

The Halloween Children reviewed by The Baryon Review

The first review for The Halloween Children (which I co-wrote with Norman Prentiss for Earthling Publications) has arrived from The Baryon Review. Jim Brock writes:

“THE HALLOWEEN CHILDREN is frankly one of the more disturbing books I have ever read. From page to page my opinion of who was the monster behind what was going on changed from husband to wife to the children and then back. I was shocked and startled, grossed out and horrified – and I enjoyed every minute of it. And in the end, I still wasn’t sure who was the craziest – myself included. Freeman and Prentiss have created a disturbing tale with images so vivid they leapt from the page into brilliantly colored pictures in the mind. This is one powerful book. Treat yourself to this one for Halloween but be warned – have plenty of candy on hand for THE HALLOWEEN CHILDREN should come knocking.”

Faithful by Stewart O’Nan and Stephen King: Special Editions To Benefit Good Causes

This has been such a wild week that I never had a chance to post this on Monday as planned! I’m pleased to announce the first book from Books to Benefit, my little side project, has been announced.

The book is Faithful: The 10th Anniversary Special Limited Edition by Stewart O’Nan and Stephen King, and it will be raising funds for The Haven Foundation and for organizations that promote cancer care and research. The Haven Foundation gives financial assistance to provide temporary support needed to safeguard and sustain the careers of established freelance artists. The authors also support cancer care and research organizations such as The Jimmy Fund. (You can learn how to donate to The Haven Foundation on their website and you can donate directly to The Jimmy Fund via their website.)

This project has been a lot of fun to work on, and I’m particularly happy with how the cover artwork turned out:

Detours edited by Brian James Freeman has been announced!

My new anthology, which features contributions from Stephen King, William Peter Blatty, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Peter Straub, Kelley Armstrong, Michael Koryta, David Morrell, Michael Marshall and Michael Marshall Smith, Chet Williamson, Poppy Z. Brite, Stewart O’Nan, and Owen King, has just been announced by Cemetery Dance Publications.

Detours is a project I’ve been working on for a couple of years, and it grew from my fascination with the parts of the creative process that you don’t see in the finished book: the lost chapters, scrapped scenes, and even the stories and fragments authors write when they need to get away from their current project for a day.

Detours

About the Book:
Every now and then your favorite author takes a detour while writing a new novel: a chapter gets chopped, a connected short story is dreamed up, an essay about the book’s origins is composed, or an oddity is created on a day off.

Collected here together for the first time are detours by Stephen King, William Peter Blatty, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Peter Straub, Kelley Armstrong, Michael Koryta, David Morrell, Michael Marshall and Michael Marshall Smith, Chet Williamson, Poppy Z. Brite, Stewart O’Nan, and Owen King.

Join these bestselling authors as they share the other works they wrote while they were writing the books you already know and love.
